Development Roadmap
SkyChart is actively developed with community feedback shaping what gets built next. This roadmap reflects our current priorities and will evolve as the game grows.
Headline Features
High-level feature tracking across shipped, in-progress, and planned work.
Additional aircraft & cities
Shipped528 cities across 7 world regions and 164 aircraft spanning 1930 to 2095, from propeller flying boats through modern widebodies and into speculative supersonic, hydrogen, and electric designs.
Enhanced tutorial & onboarding
ShippedA 33-chapter walkthrough with Quick Tour and Full Course tracks, spotlight cues, breadcrumb progress, and per-chapter replay. Chapters cover multi-stop routes, aircraft scheduling, maintenance, Realism Mode, cabin configuration, codeshares, the R&D tech tree, and the Green Frontier sustainability era.
128 Steam Achievements & 15 Stats
Shipped128 achievements across flight ops, finance, era milestones, and a handful of hidden ones for completionists. Plus 15 Steam stats, 4 leaderboards, cloud saves, and retroactive scanning so you keep credit for everything you already earned.
Era-appropriate soundtrack
Shipped44-track era-aware soundtrack spanning jazz age to modern electronic, with crossfade transitions and Spotify integration via OAuth.
Campaign scenarios
ShippedHand-crafted historical challenges with specific objectives, unique AI configurations, and custom starting conditions, with epilogue campaigns for each era win.
Localization
In Progress29 locales now ship with baseline machine translations covering 6,200+ strings. Community translators refine them via our Weblate project, and entries already reviewed by humans stay protected. No coding needed, contributors get credit in-game.
Help translate on WeblateBalance refinements
In ProgressOngoing tuning of route economics, AI difficulty, pricing wars, and event impact driven by community feedback from alpha testers.
Multi-stop routes
ShippedPlan a single-leg route, or chain it through one intermediate stop. Each leg gets its own Business, Premium Economy, and Economy demand math, plus a through-fare discount for connecting passengers. The world map draws the full path, and the route panel shows revenue per leg.
Aircraft scheduling & maintenance
ShippedSchedule each aircraft week by week and watch utilization for every airframe. Maintenance follows the real A/B/C/D cycle: A-check every 500 flight hours, B at 6 months, C at 24 months, D at 8 years. Bigger aircraft cost more to service, and a C or D check grounds the plane for a month.
Realism Mode
ShippedFlip one checkbox at campaign setup to enable the deeper rule set: 5th, 7th, 8th, and 9th freedoms of the air, per-country licensing fees, and a home-region pick. The ICAO Freedoms Codex panel ships with the game so casual players can read up too.
Multiplayer competitive mode
Compete against friends online or on the same couch with local hotseat play. Tutorial infrastructure is already multiplayer-ready.
Full voice lines
City announcements, historical event narration, UI audio feedback, and fake ATC radio chatter brought to life with voice acting.
Help Translate SkyChart
SkyChart spans the full sweep of global aviation history and beyond, and we want players everywhere to experience it in their own language. If you're a native speaker of any language other than English and want to help, join our Weblate project. No coding required, just a love for aviation and a good eye for language. Contributors are credited in-game.
Development Phases
Detailed work broken down by phase, with individual feature status.
World Simulation & Historical Immersion
ShippedA world that feels alive and historically grounded, where geopolitics reshape the competitive landscape each era.
Political boundary changes & route legality
ShippedGeopolitical events make certain routes illegal or require re-certification. The Cold War blocks Moscow to New York until détente. Indian independence reshapes colonial routes. The USSR dissolution opens 12 new republics while making Soviet domestic routes obsolete. Forces adaptive rerouting each era.
Seasonal airport capacity restrictions
ShippedMajor airports implement periodic runway closures or gate curfews tied to weather or maintenance: Denver in winter, Heathrow night curfews, Tokyo during monsoon season. Forces rerouting or temporary suspension.
Airline safety ratings & regulatory audits
ShippedQuarterly safety audits: poorly maintained fleets face regional demand penalties until they pass re-inspection. Rivals are subject to the same rules. A competitor neglecting maintenance will feel it.
International trade corridors
ShippedRegional economic integration creates demand bonuses for connecting key city pairs. Corridors break during trade wars or embargoes, and rivals compete to claim the same routes.
Historical aircraft phase-outs & forced fleet transitions
ShippedReal-world aircraft retirements (Concorde 2003, DC-10 decommissioning) force players to proactively replace aging fleets before demand collapses. Creates strategic urgency around succession planning.
Airport infrastructure growth
Shipped43 major hubs follow hand-tuned historical growth curves (Heathrow 1946, Changi 1981, Incheon 2001). All other airports grow dynamically by city population and aviation era. New Airport Expansion Alerts fire each January.
Endgame, Replayability & Meta-Progression
ShippedSystems that keep players coming back: prestige rewards, challenge modes, and campaign archetypes that make every run feel unique.
Prestige system: Legacy Points
ShippedAfter winning an era, earn Legacy Points based on your domination metrics. Spend them on permanent unlocks: starting aircraft, lower slot costs, faster capital accumulation, or cosmetic airline badges that carry over to future runs.
Scenario mode: Historical challenges
ShippedHand-crafted scenarios with unique goals and starting conditions: the Berlin Airlift supply race, breaking Pan-Am's trans-Atlantic monopoly, rebuilding from near-bankruptcy in the post-WWII era, and more. Includes scenario progress tracking across runs.
Endgame epilogue campaigns
ShippedAfter winning an era, choose your legacy: Consolidation (40 bonus years building mega-hubs) or Fall from Grace (rivals merge into a single mega-competitor and you must survive). Each epilogue has unique victory conditions.
Route lifecycle manager
ShippedRoutes track long-term demand history. Recession events compress demand globally, and players can pivot to more stable cargo operations or ride out the downturn, creating meaningful economic decisions across time.
Seasonal route renegotiation
ShippedNegotiate peak-season permits for routes that only make sense part of the year: summer tourism, winter ski resorts, or the Hajj pilgrimage. Temporary permits cost less but require quarterly decisions.
Polish & Completion
ShippedPost-phase-25 refinement and system completion: the quality-of-life and depth improvements that make the full game feel finished.
World Mega-Events System
ShippedFIFA World Cups, Summer and Winter Olympics, World Expos, UEFA Championships, Rugby World Cups, Cricket World Cups. 8 recurring historical mega-events boost city demand in host regions and reshape competitive pricing around major dates.
Transfer & connecting passengers
ShippedFull hub-and-spoke algorithm with transfer UI, AI transfer awareness, and a Casey hub tip system. Routes can now act as feeders into major hubs, creating emergent network strategies.
Universal controller focus chains
ShippedEvery screen in the game now has proper controller focus navigation (d-pad, focus rings, and focus lock on overlays) so the full game is playable with zero keyboard or mouse.
UX & HUD polish
ShippedOrigin selection persistence, win progress HUD indicator, trackpad zoom fix, Strategic Advisor "BUY ALL" fix, demo expiration handling, and dozens of smaller UX refinements.
Undocumented systems surfaced
ShippedWorst Routes Panel, Aircraft Timeline, Performance Benchmark, Keybinding Manager, Epic Games Bridge, Accessibility TTS, and the BusyIndicator system. All quietly shipped to improve the overall experience.
Economic & Financial Depth
ShippedDeepening the financial simulation: stocks, credit, emissions markets, and corporate defense mechanics that extend late-game strategy.
Stock price & dividends
ShippedYour airline's stock price reflects revenue, reputation, and market share. Pay dividends to boost investor confidence, or reinvest for expansion. Rivals have stock prices too, and takeover attempts become possible when valuations drop.
Hostile takeover defense
ShippedWhen a rival tries to acquire your airline, deploy defensive strategies: poison pills, white knight partners, stock buybacks, or shareholder voting campaigns. The existing acquisitions system becomes bidirectional.
Aircraft order backlogs & delivery delays
ShippedManufacturers run production queues. New aircraft take 1 to 6 months to build. A global backlog tab tracks every order on the way, with a cancellation fee if you change your mind. Frame the order early or watch rivals beat you to the gate.
Credit rating system
ShippedA dynamic AAA-to-D credit rating based on debt-to-revenue, cash reserves, and operating consistency. Your rating determines loan interest rates and whether banks will lend to you at all during downturns.
CO2 emissions quota trading
ShippedPost-2005 carbon markets. Older fleets cost more to operate under EU ETS; modern composite aircraft save emissions. Trade quotas with rivals on an open market. Aligns with the existing Carbon Offsets diversification.
City-by-city brand & advertising
ShippedRun ad campaigns in each city you serve. Tiers from $100K to $1M lift your local brand score. Every brand point adds passengers to routes touching that city, and a Chief Marketing Officer pushes the whole effort 50% further. Buy your way into a market without buying a single new gate.
Gameplay Depth & Realism
ShippedReal-world aviation systems that add depth without bloating the critical path: route agreements, regulation, product differentiation.
Noise regulations
ShippedQuieter aircraft unlock restricted airports (Washington National, London City). Operating loud 707s at sensitive airports costs reputation and triggers community complaints.
Bilateral air agreements
ShippedHistorical "open skies" agreements unlock route pairs. Before 1978 US deregulation, most international routes required bilateral permission. Creates natural chokepoints and strategic inflection moments.
Seat class configuration
ShippedConfigure each aircraft route with First/Business/Economy/Basic Economy mix. High-business-class routes unlock premium demand pools; all-economy configurations maximize capacity on leisure routes.
Codeshare & interlining
ShippedNegotiate codeshare agreements with rivals for routes you don't fly. Revenue splits, alliance formation, and the strategic choice between competition and cooperation.
R&D / technology tree
ShippedInvest in research to unlock aircraft upgrades (winglets, fuel efficiency packages), ground systems (faster turnaround), or IT (yield management, loyalty programs). Creates a parallel progression vector.
Carrier strategy identity
ShippedDeclare yourself a full-service carrier, low-cost carrier, ultra-long-haul specialist, or regional feeder. Each identity has unique buffs and debuffs, forcing commitment to a strategic archetype.
Competitive & Meta Systems
In ProgressDeeper rivalry mechanics and post-launch quality-of-life.
Expanded corporate espionage
In ProgressThe current intel system expands into full espionage: industrial sabotage of rival hubs, bribing regulators, stealing route data, and the risk of getting caught (reputation penalties, investor confidence hits).
Freedoms of the Air (sandbox toggle)
ShippedSandbox mode toggle to enforce the full ICAO "Freedoms of the Air" hierarchy: cabotage rules, fifth freedom rights, and seventh freedom operations. For simulation purists.
Audio polish
UI sound effects, ambient airport soundscape that scales with fleet size, and fake ATC radio chatter when clicking city markers.
Cloud save conflict resolution
Dedicated UI for resolving cloud save conflicts when the same campaign is played on multiple machines. Currently handled but not surfaced in the UI.
RTL layout support
In ProgressRight-to-left layout for Arabic and Hebrew localizations. Pairs with the in-progress localization infrastructure.
